Volunteer Diaries — Ethel
“Because of Skills For Good, I had the opportunity to work on a project that I never once imagined I would as a fresh graduate!” — 23-year-old Ethel Tan, a fresh graduate from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University.

Despite using Adobe Photoshop since secondary school, it was only halfway into her degree that Ethel, now a graphic design associate — — realised that graphic design was something she really wanted to do.
Hence, when the opportunity came knocking, Ethel was more than delighted to try something new to expand her design experience and portfolio. After learning that SG Exams was exploring to revamp their logo, Ethel took the leap of faith and accepted the project despite it being her first. It was a smooth process which took about 1 month, according to Ethel — including having a call to discuss the requirements and creating a few drafts before finalising the design.
However, the road was not always paved smoothly from the start. The initial challenge popped up even before she could approach the project. Although she had the benefit of space to explore, logo design was something very new to her. Despite the obstacles, Ethel managed to cross them by making use of online resources such as YouTube to explore more on the creation of various logo designs. With her innovative skills, Ethel adapted the knowledge into the SG Exams project. “It was challenging, but it’s fun and also acts as a learning process!” she explained.
“Be open to the experience! It can be difficult sometimes especially if you’re working alone on a project, but you can always reach out to your Skills For Good account manager if you need any help on how to approach a client.” Ethel also shared that a good start is to first look for something that you are interested and passionate about and then go on to find platforms that are able to aid you in finding related projects.
For instance, Skills For Good has helped Ethel to a great extent in providing her with opportunities to connect and work with clients that she would not have been able to find on her own. Ethel wishes to express her gratitude to everyone that was involved in her project and highly recommends creative talents like herself to approach Skills For Good for opportunities to work on projects in their field of interest.
